XLOV Reaches a New Peak With 'I, God'

Few rookie groups have established such a distinct identity as quickly as XLOV. Since their debut just over a year ago, this group has established themselves as masters of merging daring concepts with increasingly confident music. Their latest offering, I, GOD is a testament to their undeniable growth and evolution. The six tracks that comprise this EP, push boundaries and delve into new sonic territory, making it clear that the group has expanded its signature stylish and theatrical world even more.

But before we dive in too deep, let us first set the tone by establishing 法則: THE RULES. In other words, a smooth introduction that sets the mood from the very beginning. Both the track and the visualisation give an air of mystery through jazzy instrumentation and cinematic vibe inviting the listeners into the universe of this album.

As our journey continues towards its centrepiece track (which will be revealed shortly), it becomes abundantly clear how seamlessly this talented collective navigates unfamiliar musical paths without losing any sense or direction or cohesion along the way.

Coming back to the mentioned centrepiece, it’s none other than SERVE and it is easily one of the strongest songs in XLOV's catalogue. The track blends house and electronic influences while incorporating vogue-inspired energy and a sense of effortless glamour. Rather than strong hooks, atmosphere and momentum have the main role. It's a track that balances sophistication with undeniable performance appeal. But, more importantly, it captures exactly what makes XLOV stand out: confidence, individuality, and a willingness to take creative risks.

As if the momentum was not enough, the album's middle section highlights the group's willingness to experiment. Wumuti and Rui's EXTANCY dives headfirst into hyperpop territory, delivering sharp production, playful vocals, and an addictive sense of unpredictability.

BACK 2 BACK is built around a heavy bassline, dynamic structure and movement between sections, making the track constantly evolve without ever losing its sense of direction. Blending harmonies, ad-libs, and rhythmic shifts merge into a song that rewards repeated listens.

Meanwhile, HIPS changes the atmosphere once again. This time, Hyun and Haru are showcasing charisma and groove, creating a track that is energetic, catchy, and packed with personality.

MASTERPIECE closes the album on a brighter note, almost feeling like a release. Built around shimmering synths and an uplifting EDM-pop foundation, the track offers a refreshing contrast to some of the darker moments found earlier in the project. It's an easy song to imagine soundtracking summer nights, but it still retains the elegance and polish that define the record as a whole.

What makes I, GOD so successful is not simply its versatility, but also its consistency. Although the album moves between different sounds and moods, it never feels scattered, but rather every stylistic shift feels intentional. Whether exploring jazz, house, hyperpop, or EDM-pop, XLOV never loses sight of its artistic identity. The group's concept remains compelling, but for perhaps the first time, the music feels just as strong as the imagery surrounding it.

At just under twenty minutes, this EP leaves listeners wanting more, and, even though a few ideas could have benefited from additional development, still, that's a relatively minor criticism for a project that feels this focused and self-assured. Every track serves a purpose, and there is little wasted space throughout its runtime.

With I, GOD, the group delivers a statement of artistic confidence. It is stylish without relying solely on aesthetics, experimental without sacrificing accessibility, and ambitious without feeling overextended. This project proves yet again that XLOV's appeal reaches far beyond their concept alone. The group has found a sound that feels uniquely theirs, and this work is their strongest argument yet for why listeners should be paying attention.
